Fence installer reviewing plans with a homeowner in a San Diego backyard with new cedar fence visible

What does a new fence cost and how does it work?

How much does a new fence cost in San Diego?

For a typical 150-foot backyard: chain link runs $4,200–$6,500 installed; cedar privacy $6,800–$11,500; Class-A vinyl privacy $8,500–$14,000. Pool-barrier installs start around $3,400 for removable mesh, $6,800 for ornamental aluminum. Written, line-item quotes every time.

How fast can you get out for an estimate?

Usually within 2–4 business days for a free written estimate. Storm-damage emergency calls get same-day or next-morning response.

Do you pull permits and handle HOA approval?

Yes. Permit pulls are included in the quote where required. HOA submissions — drawings, material samples, color specs — are handled on our end for most San Diego communities.

Do I need a permit for my fence?

Residential backyard fences under 6 feet typically don't need a permit. Front-yard fences over 42 inches and backyard fences over 6 feet usually do. Pool barriers have separate code requirements. We confirm with the jurisdiction before quoting.

How long does a fence install take?

How long does a fence install take?

A typical 150-foot backyard install is 1–2 days. Day one: demo old fence, set posts in concrete, cure overnight. Day two: rails, pickets or panels, gate install, cleanup. Long runs or complex terrain may run three days.

Do I have to be home during install?

Not for the full time. We need you at the start to confirm the layout and at the end to walk the work. Middle of the day we're fine with the homeowner at work if there's backyard access.

Will the install damage my landscaping?

We protect plants and grass along the fence line and haul away debris daily. Some edge impact is unavoidable near the post holes, but we clean and tamp soil back before the crew leaves. Replacement sod or ground cover is rare — we can coordinate if needed.

Maintenance and repair

How often should I stain a wood fence?

Every 2–3 years for semi-transparent stain, 3–5 years for solid-color stain. East county and inland sun fades stain faster. You know it's time when water no longer beads on the wood.

My fence is leaning — does the whole thing need replaced?

Almost never. A leaning fence is almost always a post problem. We reset or steel-sleeve the post, keep the existing panels, and the fence is good for another decade. Full replacement is rarely needed if the wood above the posts is still solid.

My gate sags and won't latch — fixable?

Almost always yes. Sagging gates are usually the hinge-side post moving, or a racked frame. We reset the post if needed, install an anti-sag cable kit to square it up, and adjust hinges. Most gate repairs take under 90 minutes.

A neighbor's tree took out my fence — who pays?

Usually the neighbor's homeowner insurance under liability coverage, though it depends on whether the tree was healthy. We provide the documentation you need for either your claim or theirs — detailed photos, damage report, line-item repair scope.

What counts as a fence emergency?

What counts as an emergency?

A downed section breaching a pool area (safety and code issue), large gaps visible from the street (HOA notice risk), vehicle impact that left sections unsecured, or storm damage through a shared property line.

How fast can you respond to storm damage?

Same-day or next-morning. During major wind events we run extended hours to tarp, brace, or temporarily secure the most urgent breaches. Pool-barrier and street-facing sections go to the top of the queue.

Do you coordinate with my insurance?

We don't bill the insurance directly, but we make the claim easy. Detailed photos, written damage report, line-item scope of repair or rebuild. Your adjuster uses that to process the claim.
